  • Specialization - 3 course series

Throughout this specialization, learners will test their knowledge within the three specialization courses using a series of ungraded lesson quizzes for each lesson, interactive activities, discussion groups with peers, and graded module exams for each module.

This 3 week course is designed for telecommunications engineers. Learners will first gain an overview of 5G mobile networks, including the fundamental principles, key technologies, and advancements over previous generations. Then, learners will explore the basic architecture of 5G networks, network slicing, and the different types of 5G network deployments. Lastly, learners will discover the fundamental technologies that drive the extraordinary capabilities of 5G networks.

Module 1 explores 5G Network Design and Components, including 5G network architecture, 5G RAN, core network architecture and interfaces, and key components that make up 5G networks. Module 2 delves into 5G protocols and how those protocols are applied in network design, starting with a comparison of 4G and 5G protocols, then delving into interfaces and protocols specific to those interfaces. Module 3 offers an overview of the advanced 5G technologies like beamforming and MIMO, and how to apply them in network design.

This course is designed for telecommunications engineers interested in understanding how the applications of 5G network technology in industry, home life, and society at large. Learners will explore security challenges and breakthroughs that 5G technologies create as well as consider the next stages of 5G technology, namely 5G Advanced.
